Listening: the superpower

I’ve always been a talker and when I look back through my education the parts I value the most were those that taught me how to be able to speak in groups, communicate clearly and say something even when the voices in my head are shouting at me to ‘stay quiet’.

Over the last month or so- throughout a period of unexpected COVID 19 isolation I have been given an unexpected opportunity to hone a new superpower- the power of listening.

Of course there are many reasons why I’ve always understood listening is important (mainly to learn something you don’t know) but I’m now experiencing  listening as a superpower because I’m listening in new ways. I’m listening to hear people’s commitments, I’m listening to hear people’s fears, I’m listening to hear people’s visions for the future which they may be too scared to articulate fully, I’m listening to connect with other humans, I’m listening as one of a world community trying to understand how we move forward in a way that works for everyone.

I’m still a talker but I’m practicing a new superpower now and it’s giving me the ability to understand the world in a very different way.
